About Makeda Shea Butter

Shea butter is only found in the tropics of Africa. It is extracted from the nuts of the Shea or Karite tree (known as the tree of life) which begins to bear fruit after about 15 years and can take up to 30 years to bear a quality crop of nuts with a high content of irremovable fatty acid.

Shea butter “Makeda” is traditionally extracted by hand. Village women in Northern Togo carefully pick the nuts, crack them, and then roast and pound them. When the oil has cooled, it thickens to it’s butter consistency and is packaged and shipped.

It is unrefined, all natural, and contains all its natural vitamins. It is solid at room temperature, the consistency of butter, but quickly liquefies right around body temperature. Makeda shea butter is an ivory color with tinges of grey. Due to it’s natural state, no two tubs of pure shea butter are the same.

The natural, distinct smell of raw shea butter disappears within minutes after it has been applied to the skin. Shea butter without this characteristic nutty aroma is not raw and has been refined, thus removing all the beneficial healing and medicinal properties, and also destroying the naturally found vitamins and minerals.

Unrefined shea butter is an excellent moisturizer and can be used to treat skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis and as treatment for burns, cuts, and sunburns.

Any cream, salve or ointment on the market could contain an ingredient that won’t agree with your child’s skin. It’s best to be cautious when first using a moisturizer.
