FAQs

What is pine tar soap and how does it help with eczema?

Pine tar soap is a traditional natural remedy made from pine tree resin that’s been used for centuries to soothe irritated skin. It helps reduce inflammation, itching, and redness while promoting healing. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it effective for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and other dry or itchy skin conditions.

Can pine tar soap help with psoriasis too?

Yes. The National Psoriasis Association recommends pine tar and coal tar to help slow the rapid growth of skin cells and restore the skin’s natural appearance. Our soap can help reduce inflammation, itching, and scaling, bringing visible relief to psoriasis-prone skin.

Is this soap safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. Our Pine Tar Soap is handcrafted with care using gentle, natural ingredients. It contains no creosote, synthetic fragrances, or harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It’s also GMO-free and made with grass-fed, finished beef tallow for added nourishment and a rich, creamy lather.

How much pine tar does each bar contain?

Each bar contains 20% authentic kiln-burned pine tar from Sweden, one of the highest concentrations available. The pine tar is made the traditional way by Auson, who burns pine tree stumps in kilns to create “genuine peasant-made tar.” This ensures you get the full healing benefits in every bar.

Can I use it on my scalp or face?

Yes. You can use this soap as a shampoo bar to relieve scalp eczema, dandruff, or psoriasis, and as a facial cleanser for rosacea, acne, or redness. It’s gentle enough for daily use but effective enough to calm persistent irritation.

What does pine tar smell like?

Pine tar has a naturally smoky, woodsy scent that many people find grounding and comforting. The aroma comes directly from the pine itself, there are no added fragrances or masking agents.

Does your pine tar soap contain creosote?

No. Our soap is made with the highest grade kiln-burned pine tar that’s free from creosote, ensuring it’s safe for all skin types, including very sensitive or broken skin.

Where is the soap made?

Each bar is handcrafted in the USA in small batches. It’s cured for a minimum of four weeks to ensure a hard, long-lasting bar with a smooth, gentle lather.

Is it safe to use daily?

Yes. You can use pine tar soap every day on your body, face, or scalp. Many customers find that consistent use helps maintain calm, hydrated skin and keeps flare-ups under control.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy with your purchase for any reason, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund.

Customers praised this soap for effectively relieving eczema, psoriasis, and dry, itchy skin conditions. Many said it "makes skin super soft" and provides relief where prescription treatments failed. However, several customers noted the strong campfire/smoky scent, though effectiveness outweighs this for most shoppers.

Love the 20% pine tar soap!

Best soap for the skin issue I have which was diagnosed as psoriasis. The soap has absolutely helped smooth the spots on my skin. It's made the skin super soft and has softened the dryness of the plaques. I am doing many other treatments --supplements, light therapy, etc-- to try and fix the skin but using the soap has had the most instant and wonderful effect. I quickly ordered 2 more. Thank you.

Thanks for your 5-star review! We're so glad that your 20% Pine Tar Soap with Tallow has made your skin soft and helped with psoriasis.

I'm Noticing Positive Changes with My Outbreaks

I've had skin outbreaks in my scalp neckline area for over 2 years now and have tried both prescribed shampoos and medications and nothing that really seems to go after and calm the itchiness and proliferation of the rash like this soap seems to be. I'm barely working my way through the bar though, so only time will tell if it too begins to have minimal effect like so many of the others. I think key to using this is to leave it lathered and worked into the area for a good 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing, and using at least every other day. So far very happy with purchase and no more loading the area up with creams and oils, etc. at night before bed, just wash use daily or every other day at minimum and I believe it will work.

Thanks for your 5-star review, Mark! We're thrilled that your 20% Pine Tar Soap with Tallow combats itchiness without using a lot of product like no other product.

Amazing for my Psoriasis

I started using this Octoberish 2022, let me just say this..It has worked wonders for my Psoriasis! Flare ups aren't as much/bad as before especially during winter cold/dry months in Canada, it really helped maintain and got rid of the itching almost completely. If your suffering from Psoriasis like me, give this a try! The smell.. You'll eventually get use too, but for what it is, it works. I will be ordering more in the next few months. *Also note to the readers i use this with my prescribed daily foam steroid*

Mixed feelings about this soap

I have mixed feelings about this soap. After trying the Grass Fed Tallow Soap (which worked well for the eczema on my hands), I tried this and was a little disappointed. I like that it has anti-bacterial properties, however, this soap left my hands feeling dry and itchy. After giving it a test run for 6 months, I still didn't notice an improvement. I'd still wake up in the middle of the night from severe itchiness and would have to moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize my hands like crazy. Compared to the Grass Fed Tallow Soap, I noticed a major improvement with my skin. I really wanted to like this product mainly because of it's anti-bacterial properties and working with kids, I'm exposed to some pretty disgusting things. So, I wanted a soap that would do the job of cutting down the bacteria. I believe that it does a good job of minimizing bacteria, however, it just didn't work out for me the way the Grass Fed Tallow Soap did.

I don’t think it is your fault. The pine tar soap is not making a difference in the skin situation.

the smell is INTENSE

I have a very sensitive nose. I could smell this soap through the packaging. When I opened it, the entire apt smelled like it. I put it in 3 ziplock bags, and I could still smell it. So I coudn't use it, sadly. The smell was too intense for me. It sounds fabulous, but I couldn't handle the smell.[Response from The Eczema Company:] We're so sorry the smell was too much for you. Pine tar does have a strong, unique scent, so we have indicated this in the description. Despite the smell, it works very well in relieving eczema and psoriasis, so we offer it for those that don't mind the scent and are looking for alternative healing options.

Didn’t work for me

The smell is strong and not that pleasant. It lathered nicely. It didn’t work for my skin, but my eczema is very severe.

So far so good

We purchased this soap as a recommendation for treating my 13 yr old daughter's eczema which has been increasing lately. We have tried all the prescription meds with no luck. We figured we could try the pine tar soap and see what happens. It does have a fairly strong odor (you can smell the tar just walking into the room), but that doesn't seem to bother her. She has used it for about 2 weeks, not sure if we have seen any amazing results yet. But we will keep at it for a while.

Effective! Also smells like a house fire.

This is really making a difference for my painfully dry and cracking hands. In less than a week of use I notice a real difference. Be ready to smell like a firefighter though. And for your bathroom to smell like a campfire. It’s no joke. But for me its worth it!

Favourite pine tar soap, delivery to Canada

Long time user of The Healthy Porcupine's pine tar soap. I've tried them all, and this one is my favourite - great wash, excellent scent. The Eczema Co is the only supplier for Canada, that I know of.

Tallow Soaps — Pine Tar vs Zinc

I’ve had a nasty rash. I tried both the Pine Tar and Zinc soaps. I prefer the Pine Tar. Both lather nicely. The Pine Tar lather, on the rash — especially where the skin was most irritated & perhaps even broken through — caused a slight “stinging” feeling that dissipated fairly promptly. After rinsing & patting my skin dry, I could sense a therapeutic effect. The Zinc Soap lather, on the rash, did not feel unusual at all. Intellectually, I believe that zinc helps eczema; so I think it must have had a therapeutic effect. But I cannot feel the effect, as I can with the Pine Tar Soap. Also, the Zinc Soap leaves a slight residue in the tub that is not present with the Pine Tar Soap.

Works great!

It does have an odd smell, but no worse than other tar-based dandruff products. Works really well.

Best Purchase

First off, I have Psoriasis. I was skeptical of this product in the beginning, wasn't sure if it was real pine tar or just a gimmick like Dr. Squatch.. So I've been using this since the end of October 2021. Originally this was a gift, I ordered an extra 2 for myself to "test" it out before i give it to the person(which i did) . Within the 1st week, the scaling was gone! As over time the redness disappeared. All the expensive($100+) medications I've used doesn't compare to what this soap can do. Honestly the best purchase I've made in a long time. I just reordered, got more and will be a returning customer. Thank you
